HDC Chairman Mong Gyu Chung attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction project of BSMMU (Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University) Hospital held on the site located in Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh, on September 13.

Government officials of Bangladesh including Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Minister of Health and Family Welfare Mohammad Nasim, State Minister Zahid Maleque, and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, as well as HDC Chairman Mong Gyu Chung and Eulji Foundation Chairman Jun Young Park attended the ceremony that day, celebrating the groundbreaking of BSMMU Hospital under the spotlight of local media.

This project is ordered by BSMMU, which is the leading national university in Dhaka, to build the first center-based hospital in Bangladesh (specialized hospital for patients with severe diseases). Once the 700-bed hospital (9 stories above ground and 2 stories underground) is completed on the 52,890m2 site, BSMMU Hospital will possess the biggest medical service system in the country. The project is the largest hospital construction project among the Official Development Assistance (ODA) projects of the Korean government, as well as a project of the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF).

BSMMU Hospital is the first center-based specialized hospital in Bangladesh, and the project is noteworthy as it will improve the quality of medical services in the country and enable more people to receive advanced medical services. Moreover, BSMMU Hospital honors the name of Sheikh Mujib, founding father of the country as well as father of Sheikh Hasina, which adds more significance to the global project by HDC Hyundai Development Company.

As the constructor of the project, HDC Hyundai Development Company will perform high-quality construction based on technological prowess obtained from multiple hospital construction projects such as Asan Medical Center, Ulsan Cancer Center of Ulsan University Hospital, and Gangneung Asan Hospital. With this project, the company has established an office in Bangladesh to actively develop new projects in infrastructure and architecture. Furthermore, HDC Hyundai Development Company has successfully completed the high-risk Banegas Bridge in Bolivia in September last year, and is also stably carrying out the project for Hung Ha Bridge in Vietnam.

“This is the biggest hospital construction project among the ODA projects of the government, which is why it’s much more prominent,” said an official from HDC Hyundai Development Company. “Aside from stable projects like the EDCF project, we will continue to win more global projects with internal stability based on our solid financial structure and differentiated competitiveness in selecting secure projects.”
